Michael Clarke
Speaking at the 2013 (RUSI) Duke of Westminster Medal for Military Literature, professor Michael Clarke offered a brilliant overview on military literature and how it relates to culture. Between 1997 and 2015 this annual award was given to a living author who made a notable and original contribution to the study of international and national security and defence. In 2013 the prize was awarded to Anne Applebaum for her book Iron Curtain.
Michael Clarke is a visiting professor at King's College London and at the University of Exeter. He was the founding director of the Centre for Defence Studies, and then the International Policy Institute, both at King's College London, before he became the director general of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). After his retirement in 2015 he wrote several books. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 he also serves as Sky News' security and defence analyst.
Clarke's latest book Great British Commanders: Leadership, Strategy and Luck was published in September 2024. This study of thirty-four British commanders, from Boudica to Bomber Harris, reflects on their personal stories, as individuals and warriors, and also on their role as strategists and shapers of British history over almost two thousand years.
